Written in POV chapters and transcripts of a true crime podcast. Flip and funny. I think the author writes as if her audience was YA (but the content is adult).

I’m very torn between giving this book 2 or 3 stars, so we’re going with a two and a half. The half I’m giving because the final 1/4 of this book was not terrible. However, the rest of it was very cringe and hard to read. Throwing in pop culture references that added nothing to the plot or furthered it in anyway was really bugging me while reading this. Why date your book with game of thrones and avengers references when it was completely unnecessary? I can see how the fast-paced true crime aspect would entice people, but this one just wasn’t for me. It just feels like a book that should have been released back in 2012 when both avengers and game of thrones were relevant.

This would have been a great romantic thriller book.

I didn't get the chills  I usually like in a thriller/suspense book, and it didn't help that Lucy seemed apathetic towards the whole case, considering she was accused of killing her best friend.

Ben was forgettable to me because while he started strong, midway,he just started following Lucy's lead, and that's when his relevance  dropped.

This is definitely a book that needs to be heard on audible. Very good narration and the format of the story really lends itself to audible version.  Fast twisty read. Some surprise moments. Good read.

Five stars ★★★★★ for this laugh-out-loud whodunit.

I rarely suggest listening to the audiobook over reading the actual book. But the format of [b:Listen for the Lie|127279000|Listen for the Lie|Amy Tintera|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1709654470l/127279000._SY75_.jpg|98856472], just like [b:Daisy Jones & The Six|40597810|Daisy Jones & The Six|Taylor Jenkins Reid|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1580255154l/40597810._SY75_.jpg|61127102], is partially in an interview format that simply begs for audio to bring it to life. January LaVoy does an expert job with the array of voices and especially the sweet-as-molasses-Texan banter, reminding me just how much I adore her as a narrator. Shoutout to Will Damron too, who always does an excellent job.

As for the story, I loved the unapologetic snark coming off our main character, Lucy, through her thoughts and flashbacks. If you had fun getting to know [b:Jane Doe|36531070|Jane Doe (Jane Doe, #1)|Victoria Helen Stone|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529334139l/36531070._SY75_.jpg|58255707], I guarantee you'll find Lucy, and her friend

Savvy, just as entertaining.

[a:Amy Tintera|5768611|Amy Tintera|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1632160911p2/5768611.jpg] has written a lot of YA, but I'm glad she's moving into adult thrillers. I've confidently placed it at the top of my list for our book club to read this spring.

I listened to the audiobook in one day and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The book follows Lucy a young woman who returns to her hometown in Texas after 5 years in LA for her grandmothers 80th birthday. She moved away because everybody in her town is convinced she murdered her best friend Savvy a few years ago. Lucy was found covered in blood with no memory of what had happened to her or Savvy in the night the latter was found dead but the police did not have enough evidence to arrest her. A podcast is being made to uncover what really happened that night.

Usually I’m not a fan of the memory loss trope especially when it’s the main character in a mystery but I think Amy Tintera did a really good job with it. I really like true crime podcasts in audio books, that element made the story feel more real. Hearing the different interviews and how the publics opinion shifted when new episodes came out was also interesting.

The main character Lucy is pretty flawed (reminds me a little bit of the protagonists of “girl on the train” and “woman in the window”) but I enjoy reading from a unique perspective, so I liked her sarcastic sometimes mean nature.

Many other characters were a little bit one dimensional in my opinion, especially Lucy’s family members.

Would recommend the book to everyone looking for a quick thriller mystery, just be warned that it includes a lot of cheating as well as domestic abuse scenes.

Spoiler:
I was completely wrong when it came to the murderer at first. I was pretty convinced that it was Lucy’s father. Later I caught on (when Lucy first remembered that she had kissed someone at the wedding) but it took a while and I always love when I can’t solve the mystery right away. I didn’t really like that the murderer seemingly changed his whole personality suddenly but then that’s probably how it often is in real life: the Mr Nice guy whom nobody would suspect turns out to be the murderer.

A fast paced thriller that is a delight to both read and listen to as it brings in the elements of a true crime podcast and had me guessing the entire time.
