This book is strangely dated? I know this kind of a weird thing to say about a sci-fi novel but so much of the plot revolves around obsolete technologies like answering machines and tape recordings of those answering machines, that anyone under age of 20 reading this might be genuinely confused.
The story is a bit of uneven one as well. I was hooked and really invested for the first 100 pages and then for the next 50 I kind of lost interest and then it picked up for a bit again and then it ended. I have to say the characters weren't that likeable but the writing was fun enough for me to continue and see how it ends.
I probably wouldn't recommend this book to just anyone but if you like Douglas Adams then definitely check it out as his style of writing definitely shines through the story!

I started out very confused and it ended so interconnected. worth a read for sure, can't wait to read the next one.

Often overlooked, simply because the Hitchhiker's series is so freaking awesome that when you think of Douglas Adams, you think only of his most popular work. However, I say to you, gentle reader, that if you enjoyed the Hitchhiker's series, you will enjoy the Dirk Gently books immensely. You have the same humor here, the same dash and verve, the same excitement, and a completely different, mind-blowing plot :)
If you haven't read anything else by Douglas Adams, this is as good a place to start as any. Its hilarious, intriguing and grabs your attention from the first chapter.
I'd highly recommend it.

It's funny, I thought I had read this before--I'd bought a used copy years ago and had kept it on my shelf fondly along with the Hitchhikers Guide books. And then I started to "re-read" it for book club, and a) hated the first chapter (about the Electric Monk) and b) realized that I never had read it before, probably because I read the first chapter and was like "wtf is this" and put it down FOREVER.
I'm glad that I persevered this time around, though, because it really is a fun and clever story.
(I probably still don't like it as much as the Hitchhikers Guide books but that's fine.)
