This was great. I put off reading this as I wanted to still have books left to read by Douglas Adams, yet, I don't understand that impulse. I really should have read this sooner - it was amazing.

I enjoy Douglas Adams and this story was no exception.

This was a lot of fun! Adams' brand of madcap humor can get a little grating for me after awhile. I generally like his books, but realized early on that reading them back to back was not a great idea for me. I'm glad I chose to listen to the book - I think audio is the perfect way to consume this series. I'll give myself a little break, and then go back for the tea towel one. I'll definitely be putting this on the appropriate read alikes. 3 stars.

I think Douglas Adams is a fantastic writer and he has created some classics. However, I just feel as though his writing isn’t for me. I struggled to get through this, even though I really wanted to like it.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and I didn't meet out eye to eye it seems. I found the plot of this book a bit too confusing and also very "jumpy", meaning it was all over the place and then some. Because of all the genres mixed together, the book was very hard to follow and the plot, well I think there wasn't a clear plot in this one at all, or I missed the point of it completely.

I really didn't got a clear idea of the story because of that and I was annoyed that there were so many unanswered questions, like
Spoilerwhy did Gordon try to call Susan when he was a ghost? And why was the other ghost introduced so suddenly and without any proper explanation?
and incoherent plotlines that didn't seem to have any conclusions (not including the one I think was the main one in the ending). Also this book wasn't that funny at all and I got bored of it quite soon, mostly because the plot was so confusing. Dirk wasn't that interesting of a person despite his quirkiness and Richard was downright boring, fair and square. So, this book was nothing that I expected it to be and it got me very bored and also slightly confused while I was reading it and I'm still not sure what really was the point of the story or was there one at all. That's why this book only gets 2½ stars rounded down to 2 stars from me.

mmmhhh. I really did like "The hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy" enormously. But this is a completely different type of story. Less humor, more a thriller albeit a very weird one. Didn't care too much for it.

Because of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I really wanted to love this book as much as I loved that series. I will say, Dirk Gently had a lot of Adam's humor and writing style, it was a complex story from a unique mind, but I didn't think the story worked. It jumped around way too much from different 3rd party points of view that were hard to tie into the whole of the story. I was hoping they would all flow together at the end but they only partially did that. What was really strange was the name sake character of the book, Dirk Gently, did not even show up until page 114 of a 306 page book.

This is a book I have been wanting to read for a while, had picked it up a few times and started it, but it didn't catch my interest. I recently watched the TV series and absolutely loved it so, I thought the book was going to be even better. The TV series is based on the character but not based on the book. There is a totally different story line. This is one of the few times the TV show (or movie) was better than the book.
