That was a real wild ride of an adventure! Though I was a little muddled at first, I soon got the knack for the changing pov and Adams' writing style. The humour in this would have to be what I most enjoyed though. Seriously, the borderline ridiculousness of some of it made me reread sentences so to make sure it wasn't a mistake on my part. It never was.
This has turned out to be one of my favourite books I have read this year, and I'm definitely going to get my hands on the sequel!

Well. Once Dirk Gently showed up and the plot started plotting, I could see some of the Douglas Adams I'd loved in Hitchhiker's Guide. But I do wish it hadn't taken half the book to get to that point. ...And that the Douglas Adams I loved was rather more in evidence.

Douglas Adams is one of a kind.
For fans of the BBC show, this is not the Dirk Gently you see on TV. Which is good, because what's the point of reading the book if it's exactly like the TV show? In fact, the show isn't even written by Adams which explains why it's not as odd.
Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently is a little bit less nice, a little bit less adorable, but just as interesting & entertaining. He has a bit of that too-smart-for-his-own-good, not-great-with-people personality.
Anyway, we don't actually see Dirk for a while. We actually spend most of our time with Richard, a very smart computer programmer who isn't a great boyfriend, but is a nice guy with a major furniture problem. We also meet Reg, an adorable old professor who was my favorite character. Susan, a rather understanding girlfriend, and Michael, a pathetic, rich boy. Also there's the Electric Monk and a horse. Don't forget the victim!
This book has the usual wit of Adams' work, along with the dry humor & twisty plot lines. It only got four stars from me because of the rather lengthy bits about computers that I tended to skim over. It does take a little to get into it at the beginning because you're not quite sure what's going on. But proceed. It's a fun journey.

As always, Douglas Adams' frantic writing style drew me in and forced me to read at a pace that was much more hurried then would be normal for me. However, knowing what I now know about the books original purpose, I can see how this would be an excellent candidate for a Dr. Who episode. It was a nice pallet cleanser to get me geared up for the next book!
