While this was a pretty fun read, I didn't enjoy it as much as I was expecting to. And I'm really not sure why.
For a sci-fi written in the 80s, this has aged surprisingly well. There's a lot of emphasis on computers and other technology (such as car phones, which are only a smidge away from mobiles, lol).
Maybe it's just due to my having to read it in small chunks, as opportunities for reading have been slight so far this week. Or maybe my expectations were just too high.
Still worth a read though!

Geniale, promosso a pieni voti. Arrivati a metà libro si vuole solo continuare a leggere tutto d'un fiato, ma alcune cose sul finale sono poco chiare. Adams si riconferma un maestro della fantascienza dell'assurdo.
3.5 Star Review
This book is interesting to say the very least. Adams somehow manages to fit in every random twist and turn a story could possibly go into a 260 page book. It was quite brilliant, but I didn’t understand what was going on about 60% of the time.
The humor of the writing is entertaining (and who doesn’t love their dose of British humor?) but comes in short bursts, after long narratives that left me bored. In the end almost all of it comes around again, nearly every detail is important — to the point where I wanted to go back and read the first 6 chapters again.
However, my biggest shortcoming in reading this, was that I failed to understand the ending because I wasn’t familiar with Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poetry. I’m sure after reading his work and specifically, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” much of the book would make more sense to me. But alas I didn’t realize I needed to go into this read having done some homework.
The “fundamental interconnectedness” of the story was brilliant and fascinating to go through. It made me laugh out loud quite a bit. Yet, it took me much longer to read than I had initially expected for a medium length chapter book.
It may warrant a re-read eventually after I familiarize myself more with the poem, but for now it stands at 3.5 stars and I’ll happily move on to my next read.

Having read other Douglas Adams books ([b:The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy|11|The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1)|Douglas Adams|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1513003890s/11.jpg|3078186]), I was already familiar with his writing style. It's the equivalent of going for a ride with the Mad Hatter on the Knight Bus. Sometimes confusing, always funny, and eventually you will end up where you are supposed to go. I love Douglas's snarky English humor. But I would definitely say his works are not for everyone.
Dirk Gently starts out with a series of series of seemingly random people and events that wrap around and tie together as the story develops. I liked how Coleridge was tied in throughout the book. But I was confused by the leap made at the end. I wish it would have been explained a little more. I think I figured it out, but I had to look up the [b:The Rime of the Ancient Mariner|732562|The Rime of the Ancient Mariner|Samuel Taylor Coleridge|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1517139543s/732562.jpg|678243] to double check.

Very funny and quirky book that dabbles into scifi. Up to the standards of Adams' first two hitchhiker books. First couple chapters are odd, but it picks up really quickly and possess that every wonderful Adams charm.
Meh. Adams was just trying much too hard to be cutesy. Raced through this because it didn't deserve the attention I gave to Hitchhiker, decades ago.
