This book was everything to me. Reading about Kiki and Malakai falling in love has made me want to fall in love and has even changed my view point on what love should feel like you right now. I’m obsessed and miss them already.

I think I’m just a little too old (maybe a lot too old?) to be reading this book. It had a little too much high school drama, despite being at the collegiate level, for me to fully enjoy. There were a few elements that I just don’t enjoy in novels. But I thought the dialogue (heavy as it was) was expertly done. The author’s descriptions were vivid and the issues brought up were important and real. Just because I couldn’t fully get into this book because of certain elements, doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the complexity of the characters and their situations. Also, the audiobook was incredible, especially for a single narrator.
Like I mentioned before, I think this was meant for college aged people, which I am very much not. If I were in my early 20s this may have been a 5 star book. The premise of fake dating felt a little weak for me. I also really don’t like when contemporary books make pop culture references. Maybe one or two, but this book has a lot. It definitely works in it so if that doesn’t bother you, that’s great. It’s just a personal preference of mine. I also hate nicknames in books. Scotch is cute and I could see people loving it, but I am a resolutely firm random object nickname hater.
But through all of this, I would still very much recommend this book to people. The characters are complex, the dialogue is very well done, and the overall story is good. It’s just not for my age group I fear. If you’re over 30, you may still enjoy it, but you may also find the drama tedious at times.
LOVED how each character transforms as the book progresses. Honey and SPICE is correct. Bolu Babalola knows how to get your heartbeat up, and make a good pun for the culture!
