tina is a dear friend, a fantastic teacher, and someone i go to for solace. her book is a piece of her. i feel grateful to know her and to know her better after reading her book. thank you tina. i'll continue sending you incoherent messages in the dead of the night for you to interpret for me. i love you. thank you for being my friend and for sharing your story.

Absolutely one of the best memoirs of a rough childhood, and a beloved but troubled father, that I have read. Rich in emotional and physical detail and nicely paced. Thankfully the opposite of an undigested, one-sided trauma tale. So grateful to have stumbled across this.

This raw, honest memoir set me to thinking about the power of sense memory. Ontiveros describes the places she lived with phrases that conjured both the smell and the feel of the environment. Her writing is powerful and moving.

I enjoyed this despite initially feel like I wouldn't. Although there wasn't much a plot (maybe because it's a memoir), I wanted to find out how things turned out for Tina and her family. She does a good job of portraying how complicated trauma and abusive relationships can be.
