This book was given to me as a gift many years ago. It remains one of my favorite all-time reads and a source of much enjoyment. The book is exactly what it says it is, and is only about 100 pages, even in the dual-language edition.

I might reread this in spanish later. I am very bored of poems about sunlight and purity.

After years of watching Spanish romance movies and telenovelas, anytime someone did anything romantic they were asked "who are you Pablo Neruda?" And so of course I had to read his stuff. So I was expecting cute 'sweep me off my feet' romantic poetry... This man in anything BUT subtle. It's flowery and beautifully written and its mostly about sex lmao. And it felt pretty misogynistic and racist. The woman - I say this but he doesn't seem to be writing to anyone in specific but moreso to women in general yet is always referring to one woman - is always told to have white skin and the whiteness of it is what he emphasizes as beautiful. And when the general woman isn't described as white she's spoken of as land that needs conquering. I don't know how much more of a white man he can get.
cinco estrellas única y exclusivamente por el poema 20 me voy a tirar por un barranco
There's something lost when translated, from Spanish, It could be cadence or just the way words roll off the tongue compared to English. That said, Poem 19, that one will knock you on your ass, or at least, it did me.
I've read many quotes by Neruda, but never a whole work. His biography has always made him larger than life to me, mythical in a sense. I never wanted that myth to be challenged, fortunately, reading his work only made me admire him more.
It's not surprising that these poems were written as a young man, he really captures what human relationships feel like at that age, or at least, how they felt for me at that age. I'm increasingly more enamored with people who state how they feel in the most vulnerable of ways, ways we shy away from for fear of others seeing that vulnerability as weakness. There's an honesty to work like Neruda's, I hope to experience more work like his.

Pablo Neruda was admittedly my entryway to poetry when we read some of his works in high school, but I have fully outgrown him now. Nice to have revisited, nonetheless.

Felt like a very quotable set, but unfortunately I still do not know much about poetry or how we are supposed to consume it.
