Just not really my thing. The poetry felt thick, heavy, weighed down with the weight of its natural imagery and sexual obsession.

was not that great, but i think it is mostly because of the translation.

This small but powerful collection of poems, first published in 1924, should be read by everyone.
It is dense with beautiful writing. I'd read some of these before, as they are included in the 'Collected Poems' (published by Vintage) that I read last year. This book does the same thing as that 'Collected Poems' by publishing the original Spanish next to W.S. Merwin's translations.
This book would be worth reading just for 'Tonight I Can Write' though, which I think is one of the most beautiful love poems I've read. Indeed, I've set myself the task to learn it off by heart because sometimes things are worth remembering properly.
Read this. You'll love it.

wanted to love this book because i enjoyed ‘love poems’ by neruda, but these poems (as a whole) had a self indulgent voice and honestly weren’t very romantic. the women he writes about are always silent and don’t seem to have a lot of depth. there are beautiful and haunting lines, but i guess my expectations were just high.
