“Love is so short, forgetting is so long.”

1. Unapologetically, I would say, Pablo Neruda is THE GODFATHER of sad love poetry.

2. These would mean a lot more to people who have been in love, and got their hearts shattered.

3. I’m not going to review his writing come on. Just read it and weep.

Finished it during EDO. Favorite poem might always be 20. I liked it a lot, definitely will read again and take my time and not read it during math class.

Such a spell-binding collection! I love how Neruda encapsulates such passion and yearning through his simplistic yet powerful imagery. I particularly liked Poema IIX which juxtaposes natural imagery (such as between flowers and night) to create an unsettling yet beautiful depiction of love (p.ej., una mariposa de sombra).

Puedo escribir los versos..., o poema número vinte, ficou o meu favorito. Se possível, leia-se sempre na língua original.

The poems are better in Spanish, which is unfortunate, since i am only minorly fluent in reading Spanish. And whoever translated these poems into English did a poor job, because the wording was too literal and the flow made very little sense, and i’d glance over to the original Spanish wording and think “now THAT makes more sense, sentence wise.”

My favorite poem was #20: “Puedo Escribir/ Tonight I Can Write”

Siento que podrían haber sido escritos por algunos personajes masculinos de Los Cuentos de Eva Luna.
