I didn't enjoy Neruda as much as I thought I would.

"I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her. Love is so short, forgetting is so long." - Pablo Neruda

💛 I haven't read a poetry book in a long time. I had read only bits and pieces of his poems before, so I was pretty excited to read an entire book.

💛 This book contains twenty of his love poems and a song of despair. Let me be honest. The first few poems went over my head and I had to reread quite a number of times to make sense of it. But when I did, there was no looking back. I read the entire set of poems in a matter of minutes and wow! It touched my soul. .

💛Pablo Neruda's poems are surreal and sensual. They are oh so delicious and also your heart starts to break as a flood of emotions beseige your senses. He is a master of language and once you get the hang of it, you'll be mesmerized. My favorite poem is 'Tonight I can write the saddest of lines.' You must definitely read this one.

Poetry in translations is like taking a shower with a raincoat on. - Paterson (2016)

But it is a really nice shower.

My favourites were (though I loved them all): Your Breast Is Enough, and Tonight I Can Write.

Delicate, graceful poetry. Syrupy, flowery poetry. A gentle embrace. Love and despair indivisible, conjoined. Scenic. Fairy tale. Pensive. ‘In my barren land you are the final rose’. This line is so fine, there is no need for other words in this review. Just a few more of Neruda’s. ‘Sometimes a piece of sun / burned like a coin between my hands. / I remembered you with my soul clenched / in the sadness of mine that you know’. Beauty, you are going to find beauty in the pages.
