I’m actually so sad to review this so low. I really liked Mistborn and I LOVE The Way of Kings. But this?

0 world building, barely one likable character, and BRANDON…. I always said you were the only male author actually good at writing female characters and then you throw in this mess? With approximately three female characters the whole book, one of which is killed instantly, and the “main” one not being able to speak two words without “blushing”? Bro.

The “plot twist” at the end was SO stereotypical and I saw it coming by page 140. This was definitely not typical Sanderson writing… it feels like something a much less talented writer would cobble together and post on AO3.

I finished it because I really wanted to like it because it’s Brandon Sanderson but jeez. We’re going to pretend Mistborn was a trilogy.

Didn't expect any less from Sanderson. This book was so much fun!
I loved the action, and how lightweight this felt compared to other Cosmere books.
I liked all the characters, although they need more polishing regarding their background, which I will probably learn more about with the rest of the series!
It's very interesting to see how these characters remember the old characters. There was one scene where Marasi was reading like the old text, and it was Spook's speech bro, that was very nostalgic. The fact the city is called Elendel and Szeth/Harmony is still very present, that warmed my heart.
The Twinborn stuff is hella interesting, although I'm wondering if there are still any Mistborn, which I think is probably very unlikely.
I'm looking forward to the next book, and to having more fun reading it!
Spoiler Was the Marsh at the end? OMG, I can't believe bro is still alive

Imagine Batman in the Mistborn world. The Batman parallels aren't exact, but there's a dude named Wayne who doesn't use guns, a butler, a person who inherits a fortune.. (I believe his parents are dead but not sure about that), it's a mystery with lots of fighting, and there's several evil maniacal villains who have some crazy evil plot.

And with this I think I'm caught up on all the books I got a year ago on my Birthday...just in time for my next birthday.

REREAD NOV 2024

I have definitely enjoyed this book more on reread, and I dont think thats because of having more knowledge but just from a difference in taste. The first time I read this series I was still just coming back to readin and I was in a very high fantasy mindset. I was most comfortable reading sword and magic style fantasy and I think the whiplash from Mistborn era 1 in to era 2 put me off initially. Basically all of that to say I really enjoyed this book, it's very short so I don't have a ton to say so I'll just focus on the good.

This book is funny, not all of the jokes land and it is incredibly corny, but I think it's corny in a way that works. All of the characters have fun chemistry and the dialogue almost feels like comic book dialogue, Its a lot of dramatic monologuing and snappy one liners. I think this novella works really well as the cheesy adventure novel it sets out to be.

ORIGINAL REVIEW EARLY 2023 3 STARS

A short and sweet fantasy western, not as engaging for me as the mistborn Era 1 book, and I found the setting and characters a bit less engaging. I really enjoyed the faster pacing and more contained story line.
