I definitely enjoyed this book, though not as much as the first book in the series. I have to say that I generally struggle with the gentry + commoner stories, because they feel so wildly unrealistic. The first book made it work better than this one, to me. YMMV

It also lost a half star because of the loose end of her family.
SpoilerI would have loved to touch on them - are they still under the fist of her controlling father? Did this change antthing? She notes her sadness that they didn't show up at the wedding, but... did they even know that she was Mrs. Delamere? Seems unlikely. And it's not like they would see her picture in the news and put 2 and 2 together.

But these are quibbles. It was a good read.

This was just as much fun as the first book in this series, this time with Elinor and Daniel's best friends, aloof playwright Maggie Delamere and hellraiser Cameron, Viscount Marwood.

Everything I liked from the first one was here - witty banter, independent heroine with a hero who was appreciative of that, a couple who took a second to learn more about each other before declaring their HEA.

I did this on audio, but I feel like I rushed through it in a way I would have appreciated more in print. Still, the reader was good, I just often find myself wishing I had read rather than listened to romance (unless it's Simon Prebble with the Cynster novels), which always surprises me because I generally feel the opposite way.

I appreciate that this had a slow-burn element in the romance between Maggie and Cam, but I found this to be very slow-paced for a romance book. It's never a good sign when what is described in the synopsis covers about 60% of the book.

I almost gave up on this book a couple of times. However, the last third or so saved it for me and I found myself quite invested in Cam and Maggie's fate. There wasn't anything wrong with the story but the relationship between Cam and Maggie took a really long time to get anywhere. They had some good chemistry and the banter wasn't bad but their encounters with each other were pretty tame for most of the book and I felt my interest waning. But I kept reading and was rewarded with a very sweet and satisfying ending to the story.

This is my first book by Eva Leigh and, while it wasn't my favorite, I liked the writing and would definitely read more by this author.

Could barely finish it.

Really was excited about the plot and liked Cam in the previous book. However it just landed so flat - no final climax (no pun intended). Spoiler ahead: why did she suddenly change her mind about marrying him in the end? It makes no sense - wouldn't it still "ruin" her career? This plot was completely implausible - even for a romance novel.

Enjoyed all the fun theatre-backstage sections of the book (am also enjoying how Leigh can pull off HEAs without putting her couples in mortal danger to make them say ILY). Not quite as solidly plotted as [b:Forever Your Earl|24515550|Forever Your Earl (The Wicked Quills of London, #1)|Eva Leigh|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1426976692s/24515550.jpg|42869350] but still excellent writing.

Have a small question about Marwood's lineage: if his father is a marquess and he's a viscount (presumably one of his father's minor titles) and will inherit the marquessate how is his father's younger brother also an Earl (with at least three sons, since we meet Jeremy, Marwood's cousin and said third son, also a vicar)? They don't go into it but I am curious as to how that works
