This book took my heart out of my chest, wrung it out, and then threw it on the ground. And then it spooked me.

It takes a lot for me to *actually* cry while reading a book. One scene had tears rolling down my cheeks and I had to pause reading this the rest of the night.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend this to mothers. I would recommend it to those who are considering being a mother or who want to understand some of the reality of motherhood and womanhood.

The Push by Ashley Audrain

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

Genre: Thriller/Suspense

About 305 pages

Motherhood has never come easy for the women in Blythe’s bloodline, so it is no surprise when she struggles to connect with her daughter, Violet. But that is not to say it is all Blythe’s fault. Violet has always been a difficult kid and something has felt off to Blythe since the beginning. These feelings are only exacerbated when her son is born. Violet seems to flip a switch and that forces Blythe to address the behaviors she has found alarming for so long.

The Push didn’t feel like a true “thriller” but more of a psychological suspense book to me. Audrain successfully created an eerie, chilling tone that kept me on edge throughout the book, but the pacing and the plot never had me going “Oh my god” or “WTF”. While The Push was a decent book, it just didn’t hit the way I’d hoped it would.

Favorite Quote: “Marriages can float apart. Sometimes we don’t notice how far we’ve gone until all of a sudden the water meets the horizon and it feels like we’ll never make it back.” She paused and looked at me. “Listen for each other’s heartbeat in the current. You’ll always find each other. And then you’ll always find the shore.”

This book left me utterly speechless. I don’t even know what else to say besides it’s one of the most emotional & raw books I’ve ever read. This one is going on my favorite books of all time. It’s one you’ll never forget, even years down the road.
