This may have taken me all but five days to read, but honestly, even that was a struggle. Every other character irritated me, and for a good portion, Anne Elliot also annoyed me. There was a lot of telling and not a lot of actual doing or showing. I couldn’t ever feel enraptured in it. As soon as something mildly interesting happened, something more boring took priority. There was just no… meat.
This was my first Jane Austen and I read it for class. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be pursuing more in the future. I prefer my books a little more dreary, I fear. I’m glad it’s over, but I’m also glad I read it; I don’t think I’ve ever regretted finishing a book. I am, however, equally glad it was only 236 pages long.
