I know its a classic... I know a lot of people swear by it... but for the life of me, I couldn't get into it. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, and from then on it was downhill. I think it would have been better if I was a young child as it opens up to imagination.
I read this book in preparation for the new movie coming out on the making and the difficulty in making Mary Poppins by Disney. Growing up on the Disney Mary Poppins and cohesive story line, this was different than what I expected. The book was short stories of Mary Poppins with Jane, Michael and the twins (twins, I was not prepared for). This Mary Poppins was much harsher than in the movie, yet the kids were still sad when she left-which did make it seems that there was something about her that they liked-which I felt was grapsed better in the movie, but maybe was never intended to be. All that said, I will probably read the other MP books down the line, because it was an easier read.

I'm not the target audience for this - I expect a child may get a lot more mileage out of this than I did. There's not much plot or characterisation to speak of, just a series of strange events. I understand P.L. Travers didn't like the film but I think it improved on her work. Olivia Coleman does a magnificent job narrating this, I felt like she was in the room reading me a bedtime story.

Silly and not quite the same as what expected from the movie.
If I had read this as a kid I may have enjoyed it more. However, the movie is one of my favorites and I cannot praise Julie Andrews more for making Mary Poppins a delight instead of the dreadful stone-faced bitch she is in this book. I mean, the kids are assholes too. The whole tone is just somber instead of the whimsy the movie gives.
