A story of a nanny who flies in with the east wind to take care of four children who live in London with their parents. Judy and Michael Banks, the oldest children, often have adventures with Mary Poppins after she arrives, but the younger (less than 1 year) twins are often involved too. I love the idea of this book way more than the actual book.
The magical moments that all of the children experience are completely overshadowed by the surliness of Mary Poppins. In fact, this quote from the end of the book sums up Mary Poppins’ personality:
“Perhaps she was only being nice,” said Jane to soothe him, but in her heart she felt as disturbed as Michael was. She knew very well that Mary Poppins never wasted time in being nice.”
Mary was vain, short-tempered, impatient, and rude to others. How the heck did anyone (P.L. Travers), think that Mary Poppins was an appropriate caretaker for children?
Too bad about Mary because there were some wonderful bits in the book that really are fun to read. But the bad outweighs the good for me, I don’t intend to read any more of the series.

من تقریبا مطمئنم که پیپی لانگستاکینگ بزرگ شده و به عنوان پرستار بچه مشغول به کار شده و اسمش رو تغییر داده به "مری پاپینز"!

I rarely ever say this, but I like the movie better. It might have to do with it being a part of my childhood and the warm fuzzies that go along with it.

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers is the first of 8 Mary Poppins books that at some point I may finish or I may not.
It was adorable. If you have a young imaginative reader I recommend this. The Banks children: Jane, Michael, and the twins (who are little babies) require a nanny, and one day Mary Poppins flies in on the East Wind. She promises to stay until the wind changes. Julie Andrews does a fantastic job playing Mary Poppins. She is blunt and sharp and of course always completely denies anything magical that happens.
Which doesn't mean that nothing magical is happening. Floating uncles full of laughing gas, midnight trips to the zoo, dogs that Mary Poppins can talk to, babies who can talk to the sunshine and birds, and a trip into a chalk drawing by Mary's special friend Bert.
