Controversy strikes a small village when news of a bypass hits town. Maeve Binchy wrote the story from different villagers' points of view, and by the end, this reader felt she knew the town well enough she could have visited it in real life.

Its a while since I read this book and remember being quite disappointed in it. I normally love books by Maeve Binchy, but found this quite disjointed. Each chapter is about a different person that have a link to the village Rossmore, with some of the links not being very obvious and only just viable as links. It maybe would have worked better as a collection of short stories.

Meh. Mostly it was a bunch of vignettes that never went anywhere.

I didn't enjoy this as much as other Maeve Binchy books I've read. It does her usual thing of introducing several characters but usually the threads of the story draw the different characters together, whereas in this book all you got on most of the people was a few pages and then nothing more.

This one was just "ok" to me. I was surprised I didn't get more into it. I thought I would like the fact that it had multiple short stories all tied together. That is one of the things that I loved about "The Copper Beech." However, in this case, rather than make the story layered, I felt it was rather shallow.

I really liked it, it wasn't what I expected but to be honest I don't know what or if I was actually expecting. I have never read any of her books before so I had no comparison of previous works. I read it one chapter, two people at a time. I'll admit that sometimes in the general story bits I'd forgotten who someone was but there are always little reminders to take you back into their story and their lives.

I shed a small tear at the ending, not because it was sad but just because of what it was

When I think of Binchy novels, I anticipate a feel good story (even if the subject matter isn't always pleasant) that takes place in modern Ireland. This is novel is the complete opposite. The vast cast of characters (quite difficult to remember them all) are all seemingly connected by the St. Ann's well but some of those connections feel quite stretched. There is also some heavy subjects like child molestation and suicide/murder that are breezily discussed. I finished this novel only because I rarely ever don't finish one but I would not recommend this book to others.
