As someone who’s struggled to transition from YA to adult fiction, I often struggle to find adult-oriented books I enjoy.
But from the get-go, I was transfixed by Bad Cree. The fast-paced, unceasing tension; the creepy, unsettling dreams; the bonds between the main character and important women and non-binary people in her life — it was all an utter delight (which isn’t normally something I’d say about a horror book!)

Bad Cree was already on my TBR, yet it definitely got bumped up the list after landing on the 2024 Canada Reads shortlist. Marketed as a horror, I really wasn't quite sure what to expect, but a few bookish friends told me it wasn't 'horror' in the typical sense of the genre.
With poetic writing, I was instantly hooked by the opening scene of this deeply atmospheric and urgent story. Advancing at a slow meander, it was absolutely disturbing and unsettling at times, yet each of the characters were so real, leaping off the page. There is so much beyond the brutality - an underlying thread focusing on familial (particularly female) bonds, grief and generational trauma. Delving into the very real horrors POC continue to face as a result of systemic oppression, the social commentary never takes over.
I really appreciated getting to know more about Cree traditions and customs, the connections to the spiritual and natural worlds, and the role of dreams. Jessica Johns does a fabulous job portraying the isolating nature of grief - not only from death, but from the impacts of industrialization and colonization as well. Everything was just very well done to not detract from the plot.
Bad Cree is an exceptional and gripping debut from a rising Indigenous voice. It took me by surprise, and I will be keeping an eye out for what Jessica Johns is working on next. I suspect this one will fair quite well in the upcoming Canada Reads debates happening March 4th-7th. If I had to pick a winner, this would likely be it. Regardless of how it does, I definitely think this is one book all Canadians should read.

Was looking forward to reading this for nearly a year, so I’m glad I enjoyed it as much as I did. It’s a beautiful exploration of grief and sisterhood, and is both emotional and frightening. I do wish the ending was extended a little further, particularly given the ambiguity of that final scene.

I liked the story, the characters and their relationships. It was very well written, and while it may be a bit basic (according to others) I still liked it and didn't find it that annoying.
I can really recommend the audiobook as it was very well done.
I liked how the story flowed, and how, for example, one of the reveals towards the end made sense, but I didn't see it coming. Overall there weren't any huge surprises but it was still very entertaining.
The family dynamics were well done as there was some disconnect due to prior events, yet at the same time they all still loved each other. Also, each character felt like their own person, which was nice.

In the second/third act of the book (I’m not sure) I was so absorbed. Once things all start coming together you can’t pull yourself away from it.

This is a moody, atmospheric, story of sisterhood, family, and loss. It's definitely a horror story. I wasn't scared reading it, because as a reader I have distance from the events, but I could believe that it was scary for the characters to experience. As a reader, there was more of a sense of sadness and mystery. There are a couple of moments of gore, but I didn't feel that it went excessively for the gross-out.

This was an incredibly strong debut for Jessica Johns, and I think she'll be on the literary scene for a long time to come. This story was well-developed and interesting and honestly creepy at times. Johns created a mysterious atmosphere without forcing it and it really paid off. All of the characters felt like real people, with just enough development that I cared about them, without it being an info overload.
My only real qualm was that at times the pacing felt off and things seemed a bit repetitive. However, the rest of the book more than made up for these minor shortfalls. I'm so glad to have come across Johns and I'm already looking forward to more from her.
