This ends up being equal parts chilling and heartwarming, but the heartwarming bits take awhile to surface. I especially loved the Auntie characters and the focus on estrangement / reuniting with family after loss. Johns could have leaned harder into some of the horror aspects, but this is definitely approachable for those who wouldn’t always veer toward scary stories.

I didn’t know what to expect cause I’d not heard much about this before I borrowed the audiobook but I really liked it! I enjoyed learning about Cree culture and how important family is.

I also appreciated that Jolee’s pronouns weren’t ever explained. They used they/them and they were Mackenzie’s best friend and that’s all that mattered. 

A great, twisty monster story about greed and family and loss.

In the second/third act of the book (I’m not sure) I was so absorbed. Once things all start coming together you can’t pull yourself away from it.

This is a moody, atmospheric, story of sisterhood, family, and loss. It's definitely a horror story. I wasn't scared reading it, because as a reader I have distance from the events, but I could believe that it was scary for the characters to experience. As a reader, there was more of a sense of sadness and mystery. There are a couple of moments of gore, but I didn't feel that it went excessively for the gross-out.
