Read initially for the gorgeous art. I love the softness to the characters’ bodies. The plot itself is fine, definitely aimed at teenagers, but not engaging for me. Just not my cup of tea.
A cute (but not too cute; read the trigger warnings) lil story about a girl named Freddie who struggles to leave a toxic relationship.
I like that the book emphasizes that romantic love is not the important kind of love.

Spoilers below
Laura Dean is the stereotypical douche though. She literally says “don’t be mad xoxo” after cheating. It was so satisfying how Freddie just threw her words back at her when she left.

None of the characters were especially appealing to me. As the title says, Freddy is hung up on Laura Dean, despite realising she's an awful cheating girlfriend. But even so, she's self-centred and has nothing particularly likeable about her. Laura Dean, of course, is loathsome and Doodle comes off as the clingy friend that's jealous of how much time Freddy spends with Laura Dean, and not exactly concerned about her friend being in an abusive relationship.
The chips turn in the middle when we have a big revelation about Doodle, which makes Freddy wake up and see reality about her relationship and how she was being an awful friend, but honestly? It was too little too late for me. This graphic novel does a good job of showing how toxic some relationships can be, and how hard it is to get rid of them, but to me, it could have been so much better than that. It was OK, but that's it.

The story itself didn't floor me, but it offers a very honest look at the consequences of a toxic relationship. Beautiful illustrations and good dialogue, though I did get lost throughout some panels due to the colors.
There's so much to love here. The color pallette is gorgeous; there's something about that pink that just really adds to each page it's on. I also love the detail of the stuffed animals talking. Super cute.
I also thought the themes were handled extremely well and empathetically. The characters were complex and imperfect and that's what made them feel realistic. It can make the reading experience just a tiny bit frustrating, but that's not the worst thing.
