This book was really disappointing for me. Throughout the entire story the protagonist is being jerked around by her girlfriend. It isn’t until the very end that she finally realize didn’t have to put up with what she is. I wish she would’ve had this realization closer to the middle of the story because it just felt like it dragged on. Not only was she being pulled around but she was a crappy friend.

I loved this story. It's so non-traditional and wonderful and well-paced, and the art is gorgeous and contributes to the story perfectly. I loved the palette.
The lettering sometimes stumbled weirdly, leaving orphan letters or sometimes weird spaces between letters and bubbles, but I liked that it wasn't the traditional graphic novel font. I also wish Doodle and her story were explored more. There's so much to unpack with her story and it is simply not something this book deals with; its focus is on Freddy, and Freddy isn't paying attention — but as a reader, such a bombshell limps without more explanation. The ending in general felt a little rushed, though the rest was perfectly paced.

“Contrary to popular belief, love should never take from you, Freddy.”

"I was named after my dad's aunt Frederica, who died trying to save whales (Pretty gay.)"
Watching Freddy grow into the person she’s meant to be is more than worth reading this graphic novel. Freddy, our protagonist, is by no means perfect in any way. She exemplifies her faults, commits to reckless mistakes, and seems to make bad decisions again and again. Yet, you can’t help but find yourself rooting for her even if there’s a small bit of annoyance. She’s ignorant in most cases, blinded by love, and forgives too much, but she’s also a kind, supportive, and empathetic friend who deserves happiness.
While there is no true redemption arc for Laura Dean (as shown in the title), Freddy clearly grows and matures as a high school senior. With strong LGBT+ representation that isn’t forced or exaggerated, a diverse BIPOC group of friends, and a beautiful portrayal of what it means to love yourself, “Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me” is a must-read for anyone who doesn’t have the heart to love themselves right now.

Great lessons for teens of all types: don’t stay in a relationship that’s taking more from you than it’s giving. Great to see it illustrated in a same-sex couple, but a tried and true young adult relationship story none the same.
