This has absolutely fed my soul. I knew haymitch’s story would be heartbreaking but I was not prepared for how it all happens. My poor man. Suzanne absolutely outdid herself. The media and propaganda? On point. She really did not hold back in this.

This book destroyed me. Tore me apart on a cellular level and then rebuilt me as a different person.

This is a fantastic prequel to the original Hunger Games Trilogy. Given its protagonist is Haymitch, the connections to the original books are very explicit. It’s basically the generation of Katniss’ parents with a few that are slightly older. This book even makes the other prequel “A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” a better book in retrospect. FANTASTIC

I knew this book would be depressing going in and it still destroyed me. Suzanne Collins pulls no punches, and her books have become more adult right along side her audience.

If you've ever read Catching Fire you have a hint at what Haymitch goes through, but nothing prepared me for the hidden complexities.

This book does a wonderful job illustrating how truths are twisted and buried. There are so many lessons and warnings in here that are important.

I can't say this book is enjoyable. It is heartbreak and depression cover to cover. But like all the Hunger Games books it rings with truth and importance and reading it felt necessary.

Suzanne Collins writes a masterful and convincing world, even when that world is an utter nightmare. And the ending left me to think about how I would handle being in Haymitch's shoes.

Ps. the Easter eggs from the original trilogy were amazing and I'll never read those books in quite the same way again.
