I am very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I can really tell that Emily was the wild sister of the three. What a crazy journey this was.

The whole book was basically a description of a man going mental after losing the „love of his life“, being a domestic abuser and inflicting (mostly) emotional terror on people in his power. Or, following the abuse he suffered at the hands of his adoptive brother in childhood, Heathcliff is on a never ending revenge spree that only stops after he has died. I really struggle to understand how people find this in the slightest way romantic. Fresh after reading, I‘m still mostly horrified, maybe after some time I can appreciate the layered writing and detailed descriptions of the characters better.

Maybe I would have been more convinced of the appeal of the violent, obsessive and dark vibe if we could have had a better look into Heathcliff‘s thoughts and motivations, enabling us to emphasize with this undoubtedly morally DARK DARK GREY character. Up to the end I kept waiting for this moment of deeper understanding. Without the possibility of indulging in his revenge through feeling his feelings, Heathcliff’s actions began to feel repetitive and tiring over the course of the book.
Suspense was definitely successfully built, and I wasn‘t bored when reading this slow-paced story that spans over almost 40 years.
