For a portion of the book I thought it was heading for four-star territory, but ultimately it didn't manage to live up to it. Parts of it are beautiful, poignant and disturbing. But as a whole it doesn't quite gel for me.

The quadruple narrative--Evelyn, Hettie, Ada, Corpse of the Unknown Warrior--makes it hard to understand what's happening for a long time and it was hard for me to keep Evelyn and Hettie straight. Ada's story is a strong contrast with theirs, but almost too much of one. While eventually we find the common threads between them, those threads aren't strong enough to make the whole book work and it ends without much wrap-up.
