This book is also published with a different cover, with much higher reviews, so consider those, also. This book, according to the back has been a Kansas, Missouri and Pennsylvania Reading List selection, a New York Public Library selection for teens and a CBC/NCSS Notable Social Studies book, as well as earned a starred review from Booklist and praise from School Library Journal.

I would recommend for grades 6 and up. The main character is 15 and deals with mature topics.

It is historical fiction with part of the story about race riots in Tulsa in 1921. Most of the story, is about a poor white boy named Nobe, who goes through several difficulties as he learns what hatred does to a person. He grows from a boy to a young man through these experiences.

“Getting even just generates more hate and hate multiplies. It has a way of turning back on those who do the hating and eating them away.” P114
