just not quite my vibe

I wouldn't say this was a great book, but there were some cool elements. It was definitely a very formulaic story, but with the added bonus of a lot of discussion about music.

Not written by a transgender author, but with a very careful discussing about this, the reasons they did it, what they would do now that they know better, and their understanding of some of the issues facing gender-diverse individuals.

this was super readable, i started yesterday and finished this morning. i don't really have much opinions except that i'm glad to see another ya book with a trans narrator; they're pretty rare. i also liked that gabe got to have a positive mentor relationship with john; it was a nice antidote to all his parents' nonsense

3 stars

Great book! The plot got predictable but characters are unique and engaging enough to keep me interested. Helped me understand a trans point of view a little better. Why aren't their half stars? I want this to be a 3.5.

This was such a good book! I was so worried for Gabe, particularly when he was facing threats and violence, and I just wanted him to have the chance to live a life as his true self. A really insightful exploration of what it is like to live with gender dysphoria and the challenges facing trans people as they try to reconcile being true to themselves with the prejudices of society.

I especially appreciated the way the author introduced the idea that gender expression doesn't have to be binary or prescriptive. It was done deftly, and didn't come off as pedantic, the way it does in some other YA fiction. When do we get a sequel?
