Did I speed-read this just because my Bookclub is reading James by Percival Everett this month? Yes.
Was this A LOT better than I expected it to be? Also Yes.
"It was a close place. I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself:
"All right then, I'll go to hell!" and tore it up.
It's easy to see how this set the standard for what's considered an "American Novel". The style of humor and comedic timing of Huckleberry Finn is being copied to this very day! I was surprised at how many times I laughed out loud at this considering the dated language. And even more surprised at how many characters in this I truly cared for, Jim and Huck being my favorites of course!
While this is obviously a legendary novel, with immense literary value and groundbreaking commentary on racism, I was thoroughly bored during the last 25% or so. The story felt dragged out, made even worse by the complete reset of the growth Huckleberry Finn had undergone throughout the story. And I can’t honestly say that I’ll even remember this story in the next few days most of it was so forgettable.
I'm glad I finally read this though, and the only thing stopping me from picking up James right this minute is the fact it's almost 12 AM!

This book was quite hard to read. Jim’s character is especially hard to understand. I could hardly finish the novel though forced myself through it for my AP class. I would hardly recommend unless classics like this are your cup of tea. The novel seems to be an event for event recount of Huck’s journey. This book was painful to get through.
