Similar to Tom Sawyer, this was a gap in my upbringing in literature. The stylistic approach kept me from getting fully engaged, here’s hoping the 2024 book of the year James is a better take on the story

I felt I should re-read this classic (gifted to me nearly 50 years ago by my sisters) before reading Percival Everett’s novel James. One needs to accept that the author and the characters of Huckleberry Finn are products of their time in the nineteenth century and as the book is written in the first person it inevitably uses the spoken language of our hero - an uneducated young boy from Missouri.  Nevertheless, although told from Huck’s perspective, this is a wonderful satire about hypocrisy, slavery and racism related by a very good story-teller who brings his lovely characters to life and I’m very much looking forward to meeting the real Jim in Everett’s novel.
