It is an okay, somewhat interesting read, though I was a little underwhelmed after all the praise it has gotten.

It's the same thing over and over again. Poor boy in very bad situation. While I very much sympathize with the author and his true story, it is very repetitious. Just the same misery day after day.

There is so much misery in this book that it should be made an honourary part of Irish literature. There's poverty, beatings, neglect and a generally terrible childhood. It's impossible not to be moved by what he went through. The experiences are brutal but also relatable and feel very real.
It's very well written and deals with importance issues of class, bigotry and expectations of what a man should and shouldn't do. A powerful and fascinating book.
