DNF @ 36%. I don’t think I’ve ever changed my mind about a book so fast. I was really enjoying this, like 5 stars, until it brought up the damn Mona Lisa and her stupid smile. I was pulled out of the story so hard. I put the book down for a couple days to see if I could mentally recover, but unfortunately, the next few pages just made it worse. I’ve just completely lost interest in this story and I feel like it’s about to get derailed in a direction I will not like.

I loved that book, it was a chnage in what I'm usually reading and I appreciated it a lot. I've read it like a comic about superheroes with a touch of sci-fi and fantasy. The plot twist were great and not always expected, it was full of surprises.
I love stories with AI out of blood and it did not miss the mark, Christa and her relationship with Red Day was the best to see growing to me.
It was also great to see that there is no right anwser in the book and that there was multiple solutions more or less morals and it's not always the 'good' one who would be the most effective.

3.5 stars. Really, really interesting world/universe and magic system. Intense. Dark. Maybe too much infodumping at times that took me away from the story. Characters are incredibly flawed and interesting. Really enjoyed Red Day.

This book was unique and well written, though at times it bored me. It's hard to get into the in depth analysis without some spoilers so I will avoid it. Overall, a good read for fans of worldbuilding! Thank you to the author, Netgalley, and the publishers for this ARC.

Despite some interesting and grand ambitions, the world, characters and themes all felt disjointed. Exposition used to explain institutions in the world but the characters and people don't seem to know or believe those things. Almost felt like a teen novel in that the protagonist is on a coming of age journey in which she is the central pivot through which every other force in the world interact, and every other character felt a little less fleshed out or believable.

In a world full of advanced gene modified humans Plague Birds are AI symbiotes that watch over the towns and act as judge, jury and executioner. As a reader I loved the uniqueness of the worldbuilding and characters. Gene modifications of the past have left the humans drastically changed, and the backstory of the world is intriguing. Unfortunately the plot was a bit all over the place, and there were probably 2-3 too many ideas going on, but I'll be watching for Jason Sanford's next books since I'd never read anything like it before.
