3 stars???

This was a solid 4 star book (moving into 5 stars) for me until I got to the big reveal. I f***ing hate the cheating trope.

With. A. Passion. Hard stop for me. I probably wouldn’t have read this book had I known it was a cheating trope. I stopped reading another author because that’s the only troupe she seems to know how to write. I will stop reading this one if her next book is also about cheating.

And I don’t love an entire book with this huge secret that you hear exists immediately but isn’t actually revealed for 200+ pages but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. The past story line more than made up for it. It was nostalgic and brought up memories from my own childhood. It was warm and fuzzy and I loved that timeline with Sam and Percy.

The current timeline not so much. Percy was pathetic and winey and it was really hard to root for someone who ran from their problems for over a decade. The timeline was also so rushed and happening so quickly. It seemed like two different stories with two different couples.

I also didn’t love Charlie like I think we were supposed to. He took advantage of his brothers girlfriend in a really terrible time in her life. Now, that doesn’t absolve her by any means but Sam is his brother. His family. It’s just disgusting and really disappointing.

Then Sam just forgives them all. Um, what? Nope. Completely unbelievable. In no world should Sam and Percy have ended up together.

Huh, I may need to rethink my 3 stars. Maybe it should come down a star. I have never been so torn about a book before I don’t think. I loved reading about the lake and their summers but I hated what happened and how it ended. And that overpowered the parts I loved. Sadly.

I plan on reading the authors new book but one more cheating troupe and I’m out.

like the book was good enough, kept me engaged and like sometimes couldn’t put it down…. but i am a big hater of the “twist” in the story. like it literally could’ve been anythinggg else. but it was a fun little summer read :)
