I'm conflicted in reviewing this book. I loved the depictions of music, but disliked the way most of the female characters were written or referred to in general. The ending was predictable and not that satisfying to me; therefore, I dropped the book down to 3 stars.

This was a stunning debut novel. I found The Violin Conspiracy nearly impossible to put down; Slocumb wove together a compelling story of suspense along with a deeply moving portrait of protagonist Ray McMillian's experience as a young Black man in North Carolina trying to establish himself as a violinist. This book was a nuanced and moving portrayal of Ray's experience, and it was also an ode to Ray's unending passion for his art as a classical violinist. While I don't share the same passion for classical music that Ray does, I love that the novel really conveys the power and the meaning of art — and the lengths to which artists or those that admire the art will go to pursue and protect that art.

This is my second Brendan Slocumb book, and I again enjoyed the combination of music and mystery. The book highlights how difficult it can be to "make it" when you are a minority. According to the author's note, this was inspired by his own experiences. Enjoyable read and good audiobook!

I really like this book! I would give it 4.5 stars! I enjoyed the mystery of it all. It was also great to see a black male classical violinist as the main character.
