Wow...so much packed into this book. I loved the overlap of the unfolding mystery and a really compelling life story. Family, am I right? Sheesh.

Loved it

There were so many different threads to follow in this book! (It is, after all, a mystery.) Since Ray is dealing with the theft of his beloved violin, it adds to the reader's understanding of his chaos.

First and foremost, I think this book will appeal to people who love music. Discussing this with someone who studied violin gave me much more insight than reading it alone. What I enjoyed the most is something that will speak to anyone. It is the heart of this story: the people who love Ray, who love him no matter what, and love when he wholeheartedly pursues and shares his own love of music. There are countless beautiful moments that resonate with this element of the story.
mysterious

I love Brendan Slocumb's storytelling- he never disappoints. This one took me through some strong emotions and indeed kept me hanging on, the entire time. While I do not know much about the classical music realm, I remain captivated by his descriptions and use of technical language. Raw, moving, beautiful writing.

Solid 4.5 stars, such a good book! The reader is thrown into the plot from the first chapter. This literary mystery is about much more than a missing violin. It is about race, class, privilege and what can happen when someone sees your potential and gives you an opportunity.

I went down a Google rabbit hole with this one because I knew nothing about the classical music world or what the heck a Stradivarius violin was or how the heck it is even worth $10 million dollars. I love a book that teaches me something.

Also, read the author's note. You're welcome.

Felt like I knew immediately who the culprit was and I didn't like that it felt obvious. Good story overall.

I really wasn’t anticipating this book to be as heartbreaking, moving, and resonating as it was. Based on the title and first chapter, I was expecting more of a “who-done-it,” and instead, read a book that made me so extremely frustrated, moved, and emotional at the end. Only not rating 5 stars because I found the last 30 pages semi abrupt, but the content wrapped up the story and overall message very well. I will think about Ray and my sorrow for his experience for a long time.
