The best of the short stories with Caldwell and Feximal. Loved their meeting and introduction...and that ancestor.

I’m just going to say this right out loud ::clears pipes:: — There are some authors who shouldn’t be allowed to write short stories. There. Said. Now, let me explain why I feel this way. There are some writers whose prose is so magnetic, whose stories are so engrossing, whose characters are so intriguing that they should be given many, many words and paragraphs and pages within which the reader can become so lost that s/he forgets about the outside world for more than the space of a brief interlude with imagination.

KJ Charles has officially been put on notice.

3 stars simply because I wanted so much more from this story. Too short to really fulfil its potential. Well written, with a great sense of period and atmosphere.

I am lover of the finer things in life...Whether they come in large or smaller quantities. This little interlude was delicious. Like an aperitif...I think this is the reading equivalent of a Carpano Antica, dark, deerp, sexy and a little strange...Leaves you wanting more.

Before:

It sez the ghost is "desperate for release."

Heh.

After:

OMG I'M TOTALLY PSYCHIC

Review:

This hot little amuse bouche left me with a bit of a boner issue despite the kind of dry wit that leaves me helplessly huffing at inanimate objects.

Funny, then—and sexy, but terribly short, thus a monstrous tease.

Do I not also deserve release?

Even the dead guy gets his, you know.

I wrote this Halloween short story with a tip of the hat to the greatest of the Victorian spooky detectives: [b:Carnacki, The Ghost Finder|345563|Carnacki, The Ghost Finder|William Hope Hodgson|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1332287258s/345563.jpg|335870]. Robert Caldwell inherits a haunted house and a frustrated ghost, and hires a ghost-hunter to deal with it. There are sinister forces at work, the ghost-hunter has secrets of his own, and I don't think it's a spoiler to disclose that the ghost gets well and truly laid.

If you enjoy this story, the sequel [b:Butterflies|18718973|Butterflies (The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal 2)|K.J. Charles|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1382817738s/18718973.jpg|26584661] is a free read, downloadable as epub from Goodreads, or all formats from Smashwords.
