As much as I wanted to love this book, I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. Like many others, I saw Rise of the Guardians before reading the series and the Jack Frost presented in the film is one of my favorite characters of all time. I fell in love with the combination of warmth and child-like antics the character embodied. However the book version of Jack stands in stark contrast to the movie. This Jack was presented in quite the grown up, mature, and serious manner and to be honest, I felt he lacked a lot of the charm and ease that I’d come to love. The book plot wise is just as magical as the rest of the series, however it can be a bit of a let down for those familiar with the film.

This review is a stand-in for all 5 guardians books.

I'm also one of the people that picked up this series after seeing and loving the movie, and I'm disappointed by how little they have in common.

The books are an utter mess of characters and sometimes completely random plot points. There are absolutely no stakes and with that no tension at all, because every problem gets solved by deus ex machina, each and every time. Because there are so many characters, we also don't really get to know most of them properly. The only ones that truly get characterised are North, Katherine and Nightlight.
The writing is extremely child friendly and yet there is war and bloodshed in every single issue.
Each character has basically the same personality with ever so slight tweaks. North is inventive and hotheaded, Bunny is a clueless smartass, Tooth ... exists, and Sandy falls asleep sometimes (idk what else he does honestly). What they all have in common though is that they love to fight. Oh they're just so ready to stab some monkeys or shadow people. No wits, only brawn, this bunch.
Then there was also a lot of repetition. In every new issue, there's a plot summary of what happened in the previous book, as if it were something so deep and complicated you couldn't possibly remember it. Seeing as the bulk of these books doesn't go over 250 pages that was really annoying.

All in all I'm just vastly disappointed. I didn't expect it to be just like the movies, DreamWorks is known to add some tweaks to existing stories, but I was hoping for some depth and character development you didn't get from the adaptation.

A visually stunning telling of the origins of Jack Frost - definitely worth reading and admiring.

The art and illustration are fantastic. My son really enjoy to look at the book. I just wish that the story of Jack will be similar to the story of Jack Frost in the movie (the Guardians of Childhood). If it was meant to be a different Jack Frost story than why the resemblance of the character in the book to the one in the movie. It was very confusing to my kiddo. The other books in the series (The Man in the Moon and The Sandman) are beautiful as well and a better read.

I truly enjoyed this book and the series as a whole. Joyce really knew how to tell a tale using characters that already existed and giving them original backstories, or a backstory in general. I'm sadden to say that I'm done with the series, and I truly love the tale of Jack Frost as in the movie he was my favorite.
The depth that he has though in the story was something I wasn't expecting, so the stories of him, and the others caught me off guard.
Thank you for the stories Joyce!
