This is a book that is characteristically, everything that I want in a fantasy book. There are gods and lore surrounding them, pirates and sailing, kingdoms and revolutionaries, strong characters and development, a pinch of swoon worthy romance, and of course some magic. This book is so so good.

Caro grew up with her father, sailing on the river and has heard stories of the Oresteias her whole life. Oresteias are bold. Oresteias are favoured by the god beneath the river. She tries to embody this as much as she can as that is very much who she belives that she is and it is her fate to one day captain the wherry that she grew up on with her father. It unsettles her that she can't hear the god at the bottom of the river, as it confirms her own insecurites of being "not a real Oresteia" since she takes on her mother's bronze colouring and her father's red hair. And while hs is insecure about her standing as a "real Oresteia", she will soon find that she's destined for much greater things. She is strong and insecure and compassionate and takes no shit from the sexist wherrymen.

Markos, Markos, Markos. What character development! We meet him as an arrogant, snooty and vain young man in the book. It's clear he's highborn in the way that he dresses and the way that he acts when he finds himself in the company of Caro and on the 'small, dirty wherry'. And while he's making the best of his circumstances and has escaped from an awful situation he is coping with his snootiness and arrogance. However, as the book goes on we learn that he is willing to die for those that he loves. He becomes this character that has changed thanks to his journey and actually he's quite dashing and interesting.

There is indeed a very steamy kiss scene in this book, towards the very end which involves Markos asking Caro for consent every time before he does something. It's very steamy and very swoonworthy. Caro and Markos understand each other, in the short time that they've been around each other. He would never ask her to stay in one place and abandon her boatfaring ways and she has no desire to marry him or have him promise her anything more than what they currently have.

Not sure why it took me so long to dive into this book but I am so happy that I finally did it!

Song of the Current was such a fun audiobook to dive into. In it, you will meet Caroline. Now she was a fun character to like and watch grow. With her father being arrested, she doesn't hesitate to step up and do her duty. There's just one little snag in her new life, she is now being hunted by pirates.

Caro opened a mysterious box and woke up a boy, Tarquin. Honestly their whole dynamic was fun to devour. I just really enjoyed them being together even if they had a ton of secrets themselves. Once they got to know each other a bit better, they just became all kinds of adorable to me.

Even though I really enjoyed this book, I'm not really sure how I feel about the ending. I see that there is another book so I will definitely have to dive into that and hope for the best.

I originally gave this book 3.5 stars but after some thought I have changed my rating to 4 stars!

It's tough to rate this one. I enjoyed the story but I found a few times I got lost with what was happening! The first few chapters I wasn't sure I was going to finish the book but it only got better. If you haven't read it yet or haven't read the summary (without giving too much away), its basically about a teenager, Caro, whose father was arrested and she must make a solo journey to save him. However, due to her curiosity, she goes against the advice she was given and her journey changes from there.

Overall, the book was lots of fun and it was a pretty light read even with all the sailor/pirate lingo! There was a couple of moments where I couldn't put the book down because I just needed to know what was going to happen next. I found much of the content repetitive when describing the sailing but I think that was just me! The writing is probably what disappointed me a little bit but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

I loved the characters in the book. While Tarquin annoyed the hell out of me to begin with, in the end I enjoyed him and his personality. I loved Caro and her family and I also loved little Fee. I would have loved to learn a bit more about Fee and the other frogmen. The family dynamics were quite different to other novels but it was hard to keep up with all the characters at times.

Ultimately, I think I just went in with too high expectations but I still enjoyed the book and it was a lot of fun. It was very unique to me and I'm really excited for the sequel although I'm not 100% sure what its going to be about as you could potentially end the novel where it did. I am thinking it will be about her going solo but I'm not sure! Regardless, I still recommend this novel and I'm excited to find out more about Caro.

This is a strong fantasy debut which contained many of the elements I enjoy in YA fantasy. It is mythopoeic, there is political intrigue, and the romance worked for me on most levels. The world building is solid while at the same time the author didn't get bogged down in explaining it. She allows her world to just be making this a quick read. The plot is fast paced and moves from scene to scene quickly. Much of it is spent on boats and I could see how that would get old for some, but I felt the author broke it up well. There was so much happening. It wasn't at all a dull boat ride. The politics could have used a little more substance as could the character development which is why I couldn't completely love it. Still, it is a solid book and I will be reading the sequel and keeping an eye out for this author. (Yes, there is a sequel. BUT. This works perfectly well as a stand alone too.)

For the life of me, I could NOT remember the title of Song of the Current. I was convinced that it had the word “curse” in the title, and it royally confused me. Aside from that and the fact that I had to read it in short bursts, I loved it. It truly was swashbuckling, filled with action and romance. Because of the sporadic way that I read it, I didn’t follow the politics or groups very well. By the end of the book, I couldn’t remember who disliked who. From what I understand, there will be another book, so I think I’ll need to re-read this one before book two comes out! I’m looking forward to it.

I had a hard time getting into this book. The first 20 pages or so were really tough to get through. But after that I really enjoyed the book. I found myself rooting Caroline on and trying to figure out why everything was happening the way it was. I wish that there was a glossary of sailing terms but I just Googled the terms I wasn't familiar with. I enjoyed the blend of sailing with magic and myth. I'm looking forward to seeing what else Tolcser can bring into this world.
