The title of this book resonated with me strongly. A co-worker at the private, Christian university where I teach had put the title of the book in his out-of-office message. He invited anyone who received his automatic reply to join him in reading An Unhurried Life, so I decided to add it to my list of books to read.
If you are looking for a book that devotes 90% of the content to all the reasons why it is beneficial for us to slow down, this is the right read for you. I was looking for a bit more emphasis to be placed on the actual practices that we could use in order to live out an unhurried life, one modeled after Jesus' life. The approaches suggested by the author are ones that a person might be able to predict, without ever picking up the book:
Invest time in reflection/prayer
Sleep more
Drive slower
And so on...
The other challenge I had with the book is that his examples were all exclusively from his own life, one that isn't very similar to mine. He has spent his career in ministry, so he had lots of examples of the hurry that pastors have in their roles. He didn't have any stories related to the challenges involved in parenting and living an unhurried life, or in pursuing any other profession besides a pastoral one.
That being said, the author is a good writer and I found the book to be clear and full of fantastic scriptural references and quotes. In reading his narratives, I could envision that he is a capable facilitator and leads fruitful retreats for people who are looking for a sense of rest and renewal.

The concept of this book was intriguing, but I didn’t realize that it’s specific to a male minister point-of-view. Not too much was applicable...
If there tends to be one place I especially hurry in life, it is in my reading because there is much I am trying to get to, much of which is time sensitive. So a bit of irony here...

While there are definitely scripture references to his points, much is very practical advice based on common situations such as commuting, busy families, etc. He quotes many respected thinkers from the past and talks about the downside of living in our fast-paced world.
Readers are almost bound to find at least one take-away from their time with this work.

I enjoyed reading this book on retreat days, taking it one chapter at a time once a month. Stretching it out helped me meditate on the specific chapter and, well, slow down!
I really enjoyed this book and took my time with it. I learned some practical strategies for how to live my life more at an unhurried pace.
