This was a very difficult listen but absolutely superb. Thoroughly researched,  the book doesn't just give you facts but really brings these girls and their stories to life. If I had to give it one word it would be haunting.

My only issue with this book was the length. While I understand telling the full story, at times the chapters seemed to drag.

Otherwise, it has been a long time since I read a story that made me feel all the emotions possible, from disgust to hope. This was an absolutely wonderful read.

This book is a respectful telling of the lives of the Radium Girls. I came into this knowing nothing about them except that they existed and I closed this book only two days later and I have a much better understanding of the situation and the girls. This takes them from a vague concept of workplace safety and transforms them into real women that lived, worked, suffered, and died. The respect the author has for these victims is evident in her writing. This is not a bland statement of facts but a real story that’s being told that makes it easy to read. I highly recommend.

The story itself is compelling, but its journalistic writing style is not to my taste.

A somber and detailed look into the history of industry, medicine and the lives touched by the glowing element radium.
The Girls working in Radium factories, the "shining girls" glowing with what they thought to be simply a fantastical paint, peddled to the rich as a health tonic and beauty aid. They all took jobs to help their families in what seemed a safe factory setting painting watches, a coveted job for many. The beginning of their stories seems so hopeful and full of promise, it was truly heartbreaking listening as they had so many dreams and their lives taken from them from something they deemed do harmless.
