For all the dial-painters
And those who loved them

Before reading, I knew only the most basic things about the dial-painters: they glowed; they died. This book did what narrative non-fiction does best, opening up a topic I'd not really considered and making it speak across the past, present and future. It's a harrowing read - the descriptions of their deaths are brutally visceral, and I cried multiple times - but always clear-eyed, informative, emotional and empathetic. The cruelty shown by URSC, Radium Dial and other forces in the industry would be unthinkable if it wasn't all too common under capitalism.

It's appalling what happened to these poor women. I felt the book could have been shorter & the narration a bit less monotone, but I still enjoyed the book.

I know others have said they don’t like how dramatic the author can be, but I think it makes it more interesting. I enjoy the facts, statistics, and quotes, but I really loved how Kate Moore showed us more of these women. Their lives, families, hobbies. I got to know each one of them, just as she had, and I think it adds more to the story. It makes this nonfiction story read like fiction. I learned things, felt things, and ultimately enjoyed the book.

An intimate account is of the radium girls’ story from working at the factories, through their illness, to the last impact they had on our current workplace safety culture and relevant laws. I was horrified at the lengths the companies went to in order to avoid being held accountable as well as the tortured these women endured, but at the same time, I’ve been inspired by their strength of spirit. In this way, we remember the radium girls.

I read this at a super smash brothers tournament and only didn't cry buckets of tears because I was in public. unbelievably sad, tragic, and infuriating.  has some truly disturbing and gross descriptions. like I get why they're there but my Christ some of them were rough to get through!
