Christopher L. Bennett is quickly becoming one of my favorite Star Trek authors.

The Captain's Oath is packed full of little nods to things that will happen later in the series and they add so much more gravity to those events. I loved getting to know Jim's previous crew and seeing how those friendships helped him grow and learn and become the captain we see in TOS.

I also really appreciate that Bennett doesn't brush over Earth's violent history and struggles with social justice or the presence of similar prejudices in the future. He's very frank about it and it's presented as a learning experience for the characters.

Also I like Gary Mitchell now. Which was not the case before. So that was an unexpected surprise.

How do you get to be the Captain of the Enterprise so young?

This is a solid and often fun exploration of the years prior to Kirk taking command of the Enterprise. How does he come to be the man in the center chair? And how does that early Kirk make sense relative to his later characterization. This book does some fine work with that.

This book was dope! Bennett absolutely nails every single character, providing new material while still staying within the realm of possibility is awesome. I am a second generation trekkie (and Whovian for that matter) so I love it when the old eras are brought to modern day audiences. It feels like I grew up with them, even though it was my dad who did, and he shared them with me throughout my childhood.

Ah, I'm out of things to say. It's the last day of the readathon today so I am completely binging everything. I haven't stopped reading since I woke this morning. And (no surprise) I am listening to an audiobook as I write this review. Ok done now. This was like 10% review and 90% blah.

This read was, generally, okay. The idea of getting more backstory on Captain Kirk is intriguing and enticing, but the writing here could be at times as dry as a cracker. I found myself skimming over big sections of fluff just to get to the meat of the story.

And, personally, I didn't care for how the story jumped around in time periods. It was unnecessary. If the two periods of time had more of a connection, it would've been so much neater. But they didn't. It didn't even feel like the earlier time period story was being told as reminiscent. It just felt choppy.

All in all, I liked it for the Star Trek. I just didn't like the way the story was crafted.

This collection of events is told wonderfully and gives an apt background to the Kirk we met in TOS. There are some uniquely interesting events and plenty of very satisfying connection to canon

After reading a few of Christopher Bennett's stories he has become my favourite trek author. I believe he knows trek very well and he does an amazing job at adding quality to familiar characters in a way that respects what we already know about them.

Robert Petkoff reads masterfully as alway.

While I appreciate the idea of looking at Kirk's time just before assuming command of the Enterprise, the non-linear storytelling did not pay off. There was a lot of good character work, but I found the book cumbersome to read.
