a hilarious and adventurous historical romp. the gentleman's guide to vice and virtue is also compulsively readable; the writing just flows so smoothly and i couldnt stop turning the pgs. peppered w/ a subtle social msg and critique, the book explores abuse, racism, sexism, and homophobia, w/ major queer, black, and disability rep.

and though i like the characters (esp percy and felicity), my major caveat of this book is prolly our leading guy monty, who i find insufferable way too often, and his character growth happens too late for me. nevertheless, his yearning-filled friends-to-lovers relationship w/ percy is a delicately romantic one. might be reading the sequel just to (hopefully) see more of them!

I should have loved this more. And I would have, if only our dear MC were less horrific. In fact, I loved LITERALLY EVERY SIDE CHARACTER. The ONLY character I could not bloody stand was Monty. He was selfish, and cowardly, ill-educated BY CHOICE, ungrateful, and unkind. Percy, meanwhile, was sweet, cultured, forgiving, and adorable. Felicity was brash, brave, and resourceful. Even Scipio was a more admirable character. And I know the charm in this book is Monty’s character development, I GET IT. But I can’t help but wonder if maybe all that adventuring would not have been necessary to Monty and Percy’s eventual get-together if only Monty were less of an ass. 

With all that said, the adventure was lively, the banter was lovely, the pining was fantastically painful, and GO FELICITY GO GO GO!
