what really freaking bothered me about this was that zakat’s friend, aafreen, completely minimized how zakat felt about someone who was islamaphobic to her in her youth and who was also connected to a known right-wing fanatic nut. this was wild to me bc why completely disregard a persons experience especially when you share the same identity that the other person was being hateful towards.

I really really wanted to like this book. The premise is interesting and though this wasn't bad at all, there were just too many aspects that were not all that great for me to have really enjoyed this book.

The first thing I noticed was the dialogue. It's simply too far off from how real people talk and it takes you out of the book every time. It's also always delivered in these big paragraphs of dialogue and it comes off more like a speech and less like actual dialogue. I know, monologues are a thing, but it just did not work here.

The plot itself wasn't super worth getting invested in, but I did like the three main characters and Hayat. Also, getting to see such a variety of Muslim representation was so refreshing.

Truly, the book wasn't bad. It was just that the dialogue was getting to me and I also wasn't all that into the plot. Not bad, but not great—simply good.

This was such a great read. I really enjoyed all the perspectives, which is usually a hard thing for me to do because there is always that one perspective that I don't enjoy as much, but not with this book I really loved all three narratives. Also, this is one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen, absolutely stunning.
