I really liked this book. having a mute main character is an interesting move, it did feel a little unfinished and rushed towards the end, but that can be forgiven for how the rest of the book played out

4 stars.
This is hard to rate. I did enjoy the book, it is well written, intriguing and enjoyable.
BUT it doesn't feel like enough. I wanted more. And I was also not 100% satisfied with the way it ended. But I did not go in thinking it's a horror book, so that might be it. Doesn't feel a lot like horror generally, more "scary" mystery.
Either way a goos book.

“But the truth is, death is everywhere. Death comes for the roses and the apples, it comes for the mice and the birds. It comes for us all. Why should death stop us from living?”
This was a great read to pick up as we are moving into spooky season. It was really atmospheric and I enjoyed the plot. Something to note is that this is YA, so I guess manage your expectations when going into this!
This atmospheric novel follows Olivia Prior. All Olivia knows of her past is from her mother's journal. She has spent her whole life at Merilance School for girls, but one mysterious letter invites her to come home...to Gallant.
Her arrival is a surprise to those who live at Gallant, and is especially disturbing to her cousin Matthew who is less than pleased that she wishes to stay there. Olivia quickly learns that there is more to Gallant than meets the eye, and soon finds herself (against Matthew's stern advice) crossing the wall where she uncovers Gallant's secrets...
While not a perfect read for me, I would still definitely recommend this! It's a really quick read and I found myself pretty immersed. I think it was just one of those books where I wanted a little bit more.
A bit of a weird critique maybe, but I wish the blurb gave away less than it does! I didn't re-read the blurb before reading, but if I had I think I would have been super disappointed as it pretty much covers the whole main plotline? A bit of a weird observation maybe but it's bothered me a little!
Still a great little book, worth a read if you're after something short and spooky.
