Not earth-shattering, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
If you enjoy plucky heroines, mysterious long-lost family members, creepy old houses, and unsettling dreams, this may well be the book for you.

Magnificent dark gothic fantasy. This is my favourite book by Schwab today. I loved it.

I really love Schwab’s writing. It always feels easy to fall into—like something you’ve read before in a dream. Even when the story is brand new, the rhythm of her words is familiar. It flows.
This book is incredibly creative. The whole thing has this eerie, gothic atmosphere that feels timeless. I especially liked that the main character communicates through sign language—such a thoughtful and interesting choice, and not something I’ve seen done often.
The story itself is quieter, more about mood than plot, which won’t be for everyone, but it stuck with me. Definitely worth reading if you’re in the mood for something a little strange, a little shadowy, and beautifully written.

This barely had a plot and wasn't very focused on developing its characters, which meant that I didn't have much to latch onto. I found the writing to be pretty obnoxious as well. Its saving graces were its vibey setting and the fact that it was a quick and easy read. V.E. Schwab was one of my favorite authors in high school, but I'm officially moving on to preserve our happy memories.
