For most of the time I was reading this I was wondering why I wasn’t vibing with this anywhere near as much as I did with Vicious because I adore Schwab’s writing style and I think it just comes down to it being YA instead of adult I think I just needed something a little more fucked up from my girl.

It also felt as though there was something missing in terms of plot, at about 80% through I was shocked to find out I was so close to the end it honestly felt like I was at 50% or 60%, not to say the ending was rushed it definitely didn’t feel like that it just felt like there could have been more.

Absolutely obsessed with the spooky atmosphere in this one though, I’m a little mad I read this in July when it’s such an Autumn read.

My best friend kept telling me to read this because it has been sitting unread on my shelf for years and she knew I would enjoy it. And she was right, of course. I've loved everything Schwab has written and this is not the exception. This was such a lovely little horrible fairytale that captured the essence of traditional fairytales so well. If you enjoy spooky little tales, this is absolutely for you.

What I liked:
The writing really pulled you into the world. I loved the way Olivia's mutism worked for the characterisation and storytelling. Places as characters was also done really well. I liked the concept of the gouls.

What I didn't like:
This book did kind of lose me for a bit in the second half and I'm not sure why. The diary entries did at some point become overly repetitive.

I thought this was very sweet and tense and straightforward without being boring. Had a great pace. Read in like 2 days during the holiday weekend when I had time between pool and ocean. Dirtied up my friend’s copy unfortunately so I hope she still loves me.
