3.5 stars. A fast paced, enjoyable read. I love her evocative use of language...'the rain has slowed from pounding fists to the soft, infrequent tapping of bored fingers'.

To me, this feels like an instant classic

This book was hauntingly beautiful. The art and the way it tied into the story was so immersive, and Victoria Schwab’s prose is just incredible. I got major Crimson Peak meets Lemony Snickets vibes. It’s the perfect cozy Halloween/fall read (which is making me wish I’d waited until next month to crack into it).

I enjoyed reading about a young, mute female protagonist, and it was overall fun, but this fairy-tale-like story was just way too predictable. The audiobook was great, and the narrator did a fantastic job, but it's Schwab's least inventive work (imo).

I had no idea what to expect from this book, but I’m so glad I read it! It really sucks you in. Felt similar vibes to Coraline.

i'd say 3.5* but because i'm in a friendly mood i'll up it to 4. i loved the premise and the story is quite intriguing, but i was missing something almost the whole time. some things dragged, whereas other things i would've loved to see explored more. the cousins their relationship was super underdeveloped imo, it just suddenly changed from defensive to friendly. and i would've loved to see more from and know more of "the other side". still not a bad read though.
