Though not as good as Pillars of the Earth, this is an amazing addition to the Kingsbridge series. I loved reading about this period of time ( I have not read much that takes place in this early period of English history). It is filled with detail and great action. I felt the characters were not as original as the earlier books, but I loved the story. It does a great job of filling in the details of Kingsbridge for the avid fan of Pillars of the Earth.
It took over a year, first with the print version and finally on Audible, but this stirring prequel to the Pillars of the Earth trilogy did not disappoint. John Lee is an amazing reader!
I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book. I must have aged 30 years this year, because surely only grandmothers like Ken Follett's books?!
The Evening and the Morning is a thoroughly engaging story of medieval history, politics, war, romance, religion, family drama, everyday life and loads more. At the center of the story are 2 well-developed, sympathetic and interesting characters, and even though you can pretty much guess where it's all going to end up, the road is long and windy, and it really held my interest. Dang it, I may have to try one more Follett book before I turn 70, which I hadn't planned.
My only complaint would be that the runes and viking helmet on the cover make you think it's mainly about the viking raids. While the raids do trigger a couple of important turning-points in the story, they're very peripheral and take up only a few sentences. Honestly, it should be re-printed with a less misleading cover.

Ken Follett is a wonderful author
Wonderful book! I didn't want the story to end! Ken Follett is a gifted storyteller and created a wonderful cast of characters that live and breath! Great book!

I am a HUGE fan of this series - the way Follett weaves stories together is something I find delicious. Though there were less storylines in this book, I found it the easiest one of the series to get into. I was hooked from the start and didn’t lose interest in any of the storylines. Though it felt more “wrapped up in a neat bow at the end” than the others, I loved the characters and how they went through their lives in this story.
Definitely more enjoyable than Column of Fire. I like Follet's books with the pastoral life. I felt for the main three characters, unlike those in Column, where I didn't care much, so his character development was good in this one again. I know a lot of info is unknown in this time period, but it was hard to imagine it being in the dark ages. Pillars and World Without End are still my favorites. Was a quick and enjoyable read!
