As usual Ken Follett did not disappoint. The lure of greed and power is timeless as well as the story of good vs evil. Intertwine the church and state and you have a blockbuster. You could write this story in our World today sadly. Great job Ken Follett. I await your next work of art!

At 928 pages (24 hrs+ in audio book format), this is a true investment of a reader's time. But if you enjoyed Follett's "The Pillars of the Earth", you will enjoy this work as well. A prequel, set in the late 990's - 1007, "The Evening and the Morning" follows the lives of boat builder Edgar, Norman noble woman Ragda, monk Aldred and Bishop Wynstam. Set in Dreng's Ferry (soon to be Knightsbridge), the book has all of Follett's trademark depth of research and knowledge about the Middle Ages. I had initially forgotten Follett's penchant for extreme levels of detail in his writing but once I adjusted to the slower and highly detailed pace, I found the book very entertaining.
slow-paced

I really liked the start of this book. The series is Excellent and this prequel sounded like a great idea. It starts out really strongly but about three quarters of the way into the book it loses it's way. Characters stop acting like themselves, plots parts go nowhere, it's relentlessly depressing and the writing feels less careful.

Follet is still a great storyteller and creates a deeply nuanced world with lots of historical detail. But it's not as strong as Pillars of the Earth or the rest of the series.

Everyone loves a happy ending.

The book lays some excellent foundations for the trilogy. I love his writing style. For those who are offended by sexual encounters and bad language, you might not like this one as much.
