4.22 AVERAGE

There were elements that I truly enjoyed, but overall I found the majority of the characters flat and could not engage with the story.

I was always suspicious of this authors writings, but stuck with them as generally good stories. However, this one has crossed a line and it became degenerate....will not be finishing this, or reading any of his other books.

Epic political power struggle. Love. Lust. Betrayal. Doublecrossing. Friendship. Family. Dreams dashed. Dreams deferred. Dreams realized. A noblewoman, a builder and a monk. Yep, this has it all - the prequel to Pillars of the Earth which came out in the 90s. I remember a very dog-eared paperback being passed around with all of my college roommates one summer. And for once, I had the sense to not request this in large print or someone would have had to rescue me from underneath it. Highly recommend.

Why does he write such shallow women? Ragna forgot about her three existing children for the last one? Pfft. Sister, focus on the three you have! You know, from the man you loved so much? I thought that character flip was crap.

Loved this book! It's long, but the pages just fly by.

Not quite as good as the first three books

Ken Follett does keep you entertained, and this new addition to the Kingsbridge series is no exception. However It does not meet the standard of the first 3 - from the historical perspective. It was interesting to learn about the building of the great English cathedrals, the black plague, and the rivalry between Mary Queen of Scotts and Elizabeth -Catholic vs. Protestant. This novel hasn’t the historical events underpinning to sweep you along. A solid 3.5 stars.

Wow! What a fantastic book.....I could not put this book down. Thankfully I’m still working from home so could easily sneak away during the day to read a chapter here and there. Finished a 915 page book in 7 days! As with all Ken Follett’s books there is an underlying love story, a family of villains and the inevitable happy ending. I love epic sagas and this definitely did not disappoint!!

Absolutely fabulous. Read this prequel after I had read all of the others in the Kingsbridge series and now I am devastated. Whatever am I going to read next? Wonderfull book, wonderfully written. Thank you
